DIY Reversible Pie & Peppermint Garland

My husband is one of those staunch “no Christmas before Thanksgiving” people. I used to find it wildly annoying, but I have to admit…when the day after Thanksgiving hits, he goes into what he calls his “Christmas Blitz” mode. His excitement and cheer single-handedly makes it one of my favorite times of year. So I’ve learned to adjust by making a lot of my decorations reversible. The day after Thanksgiving, I can just flip things over and *bam* I’m ready for Christmas in a flash!

So here’s one of my favorites: a reversible garland made of felt Thanksgiving pies that flip over into peppermints.

MATERIALS
– Felt sheets for whatever pies you want, and red & white for peppermints
– Neutral colored felt (for base). I used dark brown since that’s what I had, white would probably be best. Any neutral color will work…you just don’t want it to be super obvious if some of the color peeks through
– Velcro (sticky-back type)
– Hot glue gun and glue sticks
– Scissors
– Rope or cord for the garland
– Optional: Super glue (for extra hold)

PIES & PEPPERMINTS
– The pies and peppermints are made entirely of felt.
– The tutorial below focuses on how to assemble the **garland**, but here are the tutorials to make the pies and peppermints.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. CREATE THE FELT BASE
You can’t glue the pies directly onto the peppermints…it would work for the pie side, but when flipped, the backs of the pies would show underneath the peppermints. To fix this, start by making a **base piece** that both sides can attach to.
Cut two **dark brown felt circles** the same size as your peppermint design. Hot glue a **half-circle connector piece** of felt between them, creating a small gap at the top where the rope will go later.
This base will serve as your reversible connector for both sides.

2. ATTACH VELCRO TO PIE SIDE
Stick a piece of **Velcro (sticky side)** to one side of the dark brown felt base — this will be your “pie side.” To ensure perfect placement, attach the matching Velcro piece to it first, then press your felt pie onto the sticky backing. Now your **pie side** is complete.
3. ATTACH VELCRO TO PEPPERMINT SIDE
Flip the felt base over and repeat the same process for the **peppermint side** — attach Velcro, press the peppermint piece in place, and check alignment.
**Note:** When adding Velcro, think about gravity. If you attach it only at the top (where the rope runs), the hanging angle might cause the pies or peppermints to tilt slightly. To avoid this, you can glue the peppermints directly to the base instead of using Velcro. The peppermints hide easily behind the pies, so only the pies truly need to be detachable.

4. ADD ROPE OR CORD
Now it’s time to build your garland! Place your main rope or cord between the two felt base circles (into the gap you left earlier) and **hot glue** it in place. Do this while the pies and peppermints are still attached — that way, you can easily space everything evenly. If you space based only on the dark brown bases, you might not leave enough room once the pies are added.

5. HANG AND FLIP
That’s it — your reversible garland is done! Hang it up for Thanksgiving with the pies showing, and after the big day, simply flip it over to reveal your Christmas peppermints. It’s festive, functional, and saves you time switching between holidays.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS
– **Check alignment** of Velcro pieces carefully so each side flips smoothly.
– **Test the hang angle** before final gluing to make sure each piece lays flat.
– **Hot glue the rope last** to prevent uneven spacing.
– **Store flat** to prevent felt shapes from bending between seasons.
